Nodule morphology and growth model.

چکیده
To the Editor: A recent article in PNAS by Asikainen and Werle (1) reports on the occurrence and morphology of ferromanganese nodules found in a New Hampshire lake. The authors offer data on the shapes, banding, composition, and distribution of the nodules and crusts. They also state that my paper (2) claims that the morphology of such nodules is controlled by elemental concentrations and that this idea is not supported by their data. There is no such claim in ref. 2, or in ref. 3, which is the original reference. The model in ref. 3 explains the disk-shape of some lake nodules by the particular mass-transfer processes operating at the sedimentor nucleus-water interface. The model predicts that the morphology and growth rate will depend on the position of the nodule, the water velocity (boundary layer thickness) over the nodule for the period of growth, and the precipitating metal concentration in the water flowing over the nodule. Given this data, the model makes specific growthrate predictions. For example, for the conditions in Lake Charlotte, Nova Scotia, Canada, the prediction is 50 mm/ 100 years for continuous growth, which is not inconsistent with the limited evidence. To test the model in ref. 3, the stated inputs are required, and the resulting model predictions must be compared with observed shapes and rates. Asikainen and Werle (1) report none of the data needed in the model and make no comparisons. Logically, they cannot say that this model is not verified by their data or, by inference, that this model is wrong.

Work-up of the solitary pulmonary nodule
Although the solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) is a common presentation of lung cancer, most SPNs are benign. The challenge in evaluating SPNs is to avoid invasive procedures in patients who have benign nodules, without allowing potentially curable bronchogenic carcinomas the time to progress to more advanced or even unresectable disease. Various approaches include assessment of nodule morphology...
متن کاملManagement of Solitary Pulmonary Nodules
The workup and management of the solitary pulmonary nodule is an increasingly common and confounding clinical problem for which a uniformly accepted approach has yet to be established. Conventional radiologic literature has suggested a number of imaging characteristics of nodules such as size, cavitation, growth rate, and margin morphology to guide the physician in clinical management. More rec...

متن کاملReply to Boudreau: Morphologic expression of ferromanganese nodules
The statement that nodule formation, especially morphology, can be predicted by the Boudreau diagenetic model led us to state that ‘‘diagenetic models that claim to predict nodule growth rate and morphologies from elemental concentrations (1) are not verified by our data’’ for Second Connecticut Lake (SCL), New Hampshire (2). Comments on metal gradients and elemental concentration of manganese ...
متن کاملThyroid nodule with Hashimoto thyroiditis in childhood - a challenging experience.
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the thyroid, although not perfect, is considered currently the best preoperative method in establishing malignancy in a thyroid nodule. We report the case of an 8-year-old girl with a thyroid mass in the right thyroid lobe. Endocrine investigations revealed subclinical hypothyroidism and high titer of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies. Fine Needle Aspira...
